Website Maintenance for Small Business

Maintenance depends on how the site is built

A mostly static informational site can require relatively little routine work compared with a site built on a plugin-heavy content management system or a web app with authentication, databases, APIs, and frequent feature releases.

That is why maintenance should be defined for the actual project instead of sold as a vague monthly promise.

Content and business information still change

Services, prices, staff, photos, service areas, hours, policies, and contact details can all become outdated. Keeping important information current helps customers and prevents the site from slowly turning into an inaccurate brochure.

Some businesses want to make those changes themselves. Others prefer to send updates to a service provider. Both models can work if ownership and responsibilities are clear.

Technical checks matter too

Domains and third-party subscriptions need to renew. Forms should still deliver. HTTPS certificates, redirects, integrations, analytics, and external APIs can change. Software dependencies may need updates, and more complex applications may require backups, monitoring, security reviews, and database maintenance.

A failure caused by a third-party provider is different from a defect in the original website, so a good support agreement should explain how those situations are handled.

Know what is included after launch

A workmanship or post-launch support period is useful for correcting issues in what was delivered. New features, later design changes, new pages, client-caused problems, third-party outages, and ongoing content work are usually different categories of service.

Putting those boundaries in writing protects both sides and makes it easier for the customer to know when to ask for help.

ForgeGrown’s maintenance philosophy

ForgeGrown aims to hand clients a clear explanation of their site, accounts, third-party services, renewal responsibilities, and what to do when something changes. Ongoing maintenance can then be matched to the site's actual needs rather than creating unnecessary recurring work.

A simple site should be allowed to stay simple. A business-critical application should receive the stronger operational attention that its role demands.
