A good automation target is usually a task that happens often, follows a reasonably consistent set of rules, and consumes time without requiring judgment at every step. Examples include routing a form submission, creating a standard document from entered data, sending a reminder, updating a status, copying information between systems, or notifying the right person when something changes.

Start with the bottleneck, not the buzzword

Automating a bad process can make the bad process happen faster. Before building anything, map what triggers the task, what information is needed, who makes decisions, what exceptions occur, and what should happen when something fails. Sometimes simplifying the process is more valuable than adding software.

Human approval can stay in the loop

Automation does not have to mean fully autonomous. A system can prepare a quote but require approval before sending it, collect a customer request but let staff assign the job, or generate a document that a person reviews before signing. Keeping judgment at the right points can make a workflow safer and easier to trust.

Integrations create dependencies

When an automation connects email, calendars, payment systems, CRMs, spreadsheets, APIs or other services, it depends on those providers continuing to work as expected. API changes, account permissions, usage limits and outages can affect the workflow. Important automations should have clear failure behavior and a way for people to recover.
