What Is an API Integration?

An API is a defined way for software to communicate

API stands for application programming interface. Instead of one program reaching directly into another program’s private internals, an API exposes specific operations or data in a documented way. A developer can then build an integration around the access the provider intentionally makes available.

For a business owner, the useful idea is simple: an API can let two systems work together without a person repeatedly copying information between them.

Integrations can read, create, or react to information

Depending on the provider, an integration might retrieve appointments, create a customer record, check an order status, send a document, or trigger an action. Webhooks are another common tool: instead of constantly asking whether something changed, one system can notify another when a supported event occurs.

Each provider decides which actions are available. Some features may require a paid plan or separate developer credentials.

Permissions and security matter

Integrations often use API keys, OAuth access, service accounts, or other credentials. Those secrets should not be exposed in public website code. Access should be limited to what the integration needs, and credentials should be rotated or revoked when appropriate.

The data itself also matters. Connecting systems that contain customer or operational information requires decisions about what is transferred, where it is stored, and who can access it.

An API is a dependency, not magic

APIs can have outages, rate limits, version changes, pricing changes, and discontinued features. A good integration anticipates failures and documents the external service it relies on.

ForgeGrown can build supported API integrations into web apps and digital tools when they reduce work or enable a useful customer experience. The first question is what process should improve; the API is one possible mechanism for making that happen.
