Website Backups and Recovery: What Should a Business Plan For?
A backup is useful only if it can help you recover
A website backup is a restorable copy of important site data or files. For a simple static website that may mean the deployed code and assets. For a web application it can also involve databases, uploaded files, configuration, and other state that changes over time.
Simply having a folder called “backup” is not a recovery plan. A useful plan identifies what needs protection, how often it changes, where copies are stored, how long they are retained, and how the site would actually be restored.
Different systems need different backup strategies
A brochure website rebuilt from version-controlled source has different risk than a scheduling system that receives new customer records every hour. Database-backed systems may need automated snapshots or provider backups, while user-uploaded files may require their own storage and retention strategy.
Third-party platforms also have different backup and export capabilities. A provider saying it has infrastructure redundancy does not necessarily mean the business can restore an accidentally deleted record from any point in time.
Recovery objectives make the tradeoffs clearer
Two practical questions are how much recent data the business could tolerate losing and how long the system could reasonably be unavailable. A low-risk informational site may accept a very different answer than software used for daily operations.
More frequent backups, longer retention, off-provider copies, and tested recovery procedures can increase cost and complexity. Those measures should match the consequences of failure rather than being added mechanically to every project.
Plan before the emergency
Backups are easiest to evaluate while a system is healthy. Owners should know which provider holds the production data, who can access backups, and what support path exists if recovery is needed. Periodic restoration tests are especially valuable for systems where downtime or data loss would materially affect operations.
ForgeGrown can account for backup and recovery requirements when planning websites and custom systems. The right setup depends on what the project stores and how important that information is to the business.
