Who Should Own My Domain and Website?

The business should not be trapped by its own website

A domain name is a critical business asset because customers, email, search listings and marketing materials can depend on it. In most normal client arrangements, the business should ultimately control its domain registration and understand where it is registered, how it renews, and who can access the account.

Developer access is different from ownership

A developer may need DNS, hosting, deployment or analytics access to do the work. That does not require the developer to be the permanent owner of the client’s accounts. Many services support collaborators, team members, delegated permissions or transfers after setup. Those options can keep responsibilities clearer.

Website ownership has several layers

The phrase “own the website” can refer to the domain, hosting account, custom source code, design, written content, photographs, licensed fonts, stock assets, plugins, third-party themes, APIs and software subscriptions. A client agreement should explain what transfers to the client and what remains subject to a third-party license or service agreement.

Keep recovery information current

The owner should keep account email addresses, MFA methods, billing information and recovery options current. If an employee, agency or family member is the only person who can receive a login code, a future emergency can become unnecessarily difficult. Passwords should not be placed in general handoff documents or emailed around casually.
