What Does Website Hosting Actually Do?

Hosting is where the website is served from

A domain name is the address people type; hosting is the infrastructure that stores or delivers the website so visitors can reach it. Depending on the project, hosting may serve static files, run application code, connect to databases, store uploaded media, process server functions, or provide deployment and security features.

Domain and hosting are separate decisions

A business can register its domain with one provider and host the website with another. DNS records connect the domain to the correct service. Keeping these concepts separate is useful because changing hosting does not necessarily mean giving up the domain, and transferring a domain should not be treated as a normal requirement just to rebuild a website.

Different projects need different infrastructure

A simple informational site can have modest hosting needs. A web app with authentication, database queries, file uploads, scheduled tasks or heavy traffic may depend on several services. Costs can therefore range from very small to meaningful recurring infrastructure expenses depending on the system.

Know who owns the account

The business should understand which hosting account contains the production site, who pays the bill, who has administrator access, and how the site can be transferred or recovered. Developer access can be granted through collaborator or team permissions where the platform supports it rather than sharing a single password.

ForgeGrown plans for handoff

ForgeGrown prefers arrangements where the client can retain control of its domain and production services while ForgeGrown receives the access needed to build and maintain the project. Hosting requirements and third-party costs should be identified before launch so the client is not surprised by an avoidable dependency.
