Who Is Responsible for Website Security?
Website security is not one switch
Security is shared across several layers. The website code matters, but so do hosting configuration, domain and email accounts, passwords, administrator permissions, databases, third-party integrations, payment providers, and the devices people use to manage them.
That means no developer or hosting company can make every part of a business’s online presence secure by itself. Good security comes from reducing risk across the whole system and assigning responsibility for the pieces that different parties control.
Account security is part of website security
A well-built site can still be affected if an owner’s email or hosting account is compromised. Strong unique passwords, multifactor authentication or passkeys where available, limited administrator access, and prompt removal of old collaborators are basic protections for important accounts.
Businesses should also know which accounts are recovery channels for other services. Protecting the primary email account is particularly important because password-reset messages and security alerts often flow through it.
The application has responsibilities too
Custom systems need appropriate authentication, authorization, input handling, secret management, dependency maintenance, and data-access rules. Public forms may need abuse controls. Private dashboards should enforce permissions on the server or data layer rather than relying on a hidden URL.
Payment card handling is another reason to use established payment providers rather than building sensitive payment infrastructure unnecessarily. The exact controls depend on what the system does and what information it stores.
Security continues after launch
Software providers change, credentials are added and removed, domains renew, and new vulnerabilities can appear. Maintenance may therefore include dependency updates, access reviews, monitoring, backups, or provider-specific security work where appropriate.
ForgeGrown can build security considerations into project planning and explain which responsibilities remain with the business or third-party provider. Security is risk management, not a promise that a website can never be attacked or experience a failure.
